As a supporting unit of Universitas Gadjah Mada in the field of agro-science and technology, The Center for Agrotechnology Innovation (PIAT) has a research development program based on Indonesia’s wealth, namely the wealth of biodiversity and socio-cultural wealth in accordance with the UGM concept to deeply rooted. To support the research development program, in 2021 PIAT has a target to commercialize one superior variety of rice seeds which are the result of agro-technological innovation by utilizing genetic resources.
PIAT UGM in collaboration with Faculty of Agriculture UGM and PT Tunas Widji Inti Nayottama (PT TWINN) conducted research to develop these superior varieties of rice seeds. This superior variety of rice seeds is a series from Gamapadi which can later be planted in paddy fields, dry land, even under forest stands. Until now, those rice seeds are still being tested for planting in two PIAT locations, namely Berbah and Mangunan.
Gamapadi will be issued in several numbers, and is currently in the process of varieties registering at the Center for Agricultural Plant Variety Protection (PPVTP), hence at the end of the year, this variety is expected to be released and widely used by farmers.
